Will i be prosecuted for this hit and run?!?

I just got my license and was driving on my own for the first time. I accidentally bumped the car in front of me when I stopped at a red light. It wasn't hard enough to really leave any mark on his car, but it was strong enough so he could feel that I actually hit him. I panicked, and once the light turned green and he pulled over to the right, I floored it. It was a stupid thing to do, but I was so afraid of what would happen because I had just gotten my license weeks ago. He began chasing me, and I didn't know what to do but to keep going. He caught up to me after a couple blocks then made a U-turn and left. I think that he may have taken down my license number to report to the police. There was no real damage to his car or my car. When I looked at my car later, I couldn't even tell that there was anything wrong with it except for a slight indentation in the license plate. I'm sure that it's the same for his car. I hear that the consequence for a hit and run in California for property and vehicular damages is $1000 or six months imprisonment. Can this happened to me? I'm only 17 and have just begun to receive college acceptances. I cant afford to go to jail or have such a big infraction against me that will revoke all my acceptances. It would ruin my life.
