How bad are misdemeanors?

Seeing as how the laws are generally different in each state, let me start off by stating that I live in Northern California. Today I got pulled over for going a bit under the speed limit and I got a misdemeanor ticket. My question is; do misdemeanors go on your record? I know infractions do but what about misdemeanors?
